Tickling the ivories to brighten up the city centre

Pop-up piano performances will be brightening up commuters and shoppers in Leeds city centre on a regular basis as the sound of music comes to the Leeds Piano Trail.

LeedsBID and Leeds International Piano Competition (LIPC) have teamed up to present monthly pop-up performances – Days of Play – on the Leeds Piano Trail to animate the city centre and entertain people. Six pianos are currently situated out across the city centre, available for budding, amateur and professional pianists to play – as well as hosting special public events and recitals.

The Leeds Piano Trail is hosting a number of colourful performances on its instruments of the planned musical programme of events to run throughout the year, with musicians taking a seat at some of the city centre’s resident pianos.

Something very special happens when you make pianos available for anyone to play – normal people with incredible skills reveal their hidden talents and bring our city spaces to life with their music,” said Fiona Sinclair, LIPC’s Chief Executive. “The piano is at the heart of our city’s identity, so it’s incredibly exciting to be working with LeedsBID to bring more opportunities for people to experience and play it.”

Karen Butler, LeedsBID’s Head of Place added: “We are delighted to be working with Leeds International Piano Competition once again in animating The Leeds Piano Trail, using music and local talent to bring places and spaces to life across the city centre.”

Forthcoming Days of Play are already in the diary for the first quarter of the year – Sunday 5th February, Saturday 4th March and Saturday 1st April.

Pianos on the Leeds Piano Trail can be found at: Trinity Leeds, Victoria Quarter, Kirkgate Market, The Light, Leeds Playhouse and Merrion Centre.
